We sat in an empty, whitewashed room under harsh floodlights, but the atmosphere was anything but spartan.
We (meaning the Global Villages team of Alex, Arne, the British photographer, Fabrice, and myself) were in the new building of the Guwahati Artists’ Guild, currently under construction, but still teeming with signs of creativity underneath the rubble, like paintings leaned against building blocks and half-finished sculptures resting between pieces of lumber.
Esteemed speakers from the design, art & architectural spheres combined for the India Design Forum at Le Meridien Hotel in Delhi on the 9th and 10th of March. Alex White Mazzarella was invited to present Artefacting’s work as part of an Urban Response panel that aimed at discussing approaches to urban development and management in 2012 India.
It’s been a year since Artefacting Mumbai adorned Dharavi with what was an appreciative arts festival for locals and an open house/contemporary art exhibition for outsiders. And now a year later Arne and I have returned to Dharavi straight off the plane, to meet familiar faces, friends and local partners and explore the continuation of our work with Dharavi.

ARTEFACTING MUMBAI: by Alex White Mazzarella
Artefacting: the act of excavating, understanding and delivering untold stories and unchartered perspectives about a place and its’ people. An interaction and connection with a distant life and people by way of immersion and artistic recording. The transmission of a cross-cultural understanding that emerges over time, experience and contact.
